Story

This song was written for my wife and first daughter.  Which means that now my second daughter can NEVER hear it.

Lyrics

I wake up to your sleepy head

and I wonder what you're dreaming

I struggle to get out of bed

And make sure the pot is steaming

Don't know what I was looking for, but it's you

Don't remember what I needed, but it's you

The world is turning round us

It can shake you to your knees

But I can keep my feet dear

if you'll stand right next to me

Don't know what I was looking for, but it's you

Don't remember what I needed, but it's you

I may never say the things you need to hear

but you can be sure they're written on my heart

and I need to be the one that you can turn to

Please turn to me

Now our little one is sleeping

And it's such a sight to see

How beautiful this girl is

That came from you and me

Don't know what I was looking for, but it's you

Don't remember what I needed, but it's you

Story

I often write songs just beginning with what I think is an interesting title.  So I gave myself the project of writing songs with video game titles.  I started on Grand Theft Auto with the image of the video game and the line "he wears his top hat in the rain, and doesn't remember what time it is", which came to me and seemed interesting.  However, the in-game motif of shooting random bystanders and stealing their pocket change didn't provide much lyrical fruit (it's a fairly brutal game, although I must say brilliantly constructed, from a closet gaming-nerd's perspective).  However, the title stuck and I ended up with a love story written from the perspective of a car thief whose actions end up facilitating the relationship.

Ok, I guess it's weird.  I gotta be me.

Grand Theft Auto Lyrics

The shoeshine boy is dancing

Remembering the checkout girl

He met her just last week

He's turning 'round like a top

I think that he can't stop

Since he kissed her on the cheek

He wears his tophat in the rain

And doesn't remember what time it is

All the world can stop today

As this thief he slips away

It's another case of Grand Theft Auto

His heart is beating like a drum

He hopes that she will come

To the place they met last week

I'm watching from the corner store

He's running in the rain

and he stops right next to me

There's an angel at the corner till

so he doesn't notice me

as I slip off with his keys

And it seems the sky is listening

turning in it's sleep

It's another case of Grand Theft Auto

It's funny how these things can happen

It's never what you dream

It's only right that she should take him home

it seems he's lost his keys...
